 Canadians and TN Visas

Not all Canadian citizens have to have a TN visa, most can just apply for TN non-immigrant status when they enter the US. Canadian citizens who live in a third country have to apply for TN non-immigrant visas.

How to Apply for TN Visas

The following are the basic steps for applying for a TN visa:

  • File for status online. You will need to fill out a non-immigrant visa application online with the USCIS. This form is also called the DS-160. You will also need to upload a photo. The photo must be in a certain format in order to be accepted.
  • The interview. You will need to schedule an interview with an embassy in the country in which you live. For the purpose of this article, it is likely that this embassy would be in Canada. Before you attend your interview you will have to pay the associated fee.
  • Prepare required documentation. You will have to bring along your passport, Form DS-160, fee receipt, job offer or contract, evidence of your education and a photograph that conforms to the government’s guidelines.
  • When you attend your visa interview you will need to submit to biometric data collection. This is generally a simple fingerprinting.
