How to Calculate Residence in Canada

Who is Eligible

Individuals eligible to apply for Canadian citizenship are required to calculate residence in Canada.

The Citizenship Act requires individuals to reside in Canada 1095 days (3 years) in the 4 years immediately before the date of the application being submitted. Individuals may count 1/2 time (up to a maximum of 730 half days which equals 365 days) for the time they resided in Canada before they became permanent residents. The time individuals reside in Canada after they became permanent residents counts as full time.
